Remarks before the Greene County Central Committee, January 10, 2008
Thank you for the opportunity to ask for your endorsement tonight …. We are very limited on time so allow me to direct you to reformcongress.com to review my experience and issue statements. Let’s get right to the root causes of our problems in America and here in the 7th Congressional District: Here’s a snapshot of the economic and political landscape in Ohio:
The simple truth is that Republican and Democrat insiders, corporate elitists, special interests and lobbyists have a stranglehold on government, and to one degree or another, my three opponents have allowed that to happen. Every two years we go through the same drill. The insiders promise they will stop the over-spending, fix Social Security, stop illegal immigration, fix healthcare, end abortion, win the wars on drugs and poverty and end racism, but nothing changes. The only way things will change is if we eliminate the root causes of the fraud, waste, abuse and corruption embedded in big government. To illustrate, let me compare two campaign contributions I received with some Steve Austria received.
My very first contribution was for $25 I received from a Combat Medic in Oklahoma.
And here’s an email describing a $25 contribution I received last week. Mr. Mitchel, as an Ohio citizen, I am not in your district, but I am sending you a donation to help in your cause. As a long standing Republican, the party has been corrupted by the very principals we have always fought against. It is not much, but I am sure to send some each week. I pray for your victory for my 17 year old son!
Now here are two of Steve Austria’s first few donations disclosed on the FEC website. American Bankers Association PAC ($2500), Huntington Bancshares PAC ($5000) Now how do you think Steve will vote when the bankers’ and their lobbyists come to him and ask for a federal bailout of their risky sub-prime mortgage loans and say, “Steve, we really want to support you for your reelection, but you’re going to have to help us out on this one.”
The root cause of the problem has nothing to do with the crises in Social Security, illegal immigration, healthcare, the war in Iraq – they are merely symptoms. The root cause of our problems are the fraud, waste, abuse and corruption going on in Greene County, Columbus and Washington, and frankly my opponents can’t understand this because they haven’t been fighting it for ten years as I have.
My solution would be to remove all temptation to become a career politician. That is best done by term limits and tax reform, which will remove the incentives to become a career politician.
